It is in him (Jesus Christ) that you too are built with them to form an habitation of God in the Spirit. Ephesians 2:22
God's dwelling
"The fire at the eight-century-old cathedral caused a stir around the world. Beyond the religious symbol, Notre-Dame is seen as the heart of France and European culture. The spirit of the monument will survive !"
A newspaper thus commented on the fire at Notre-Dame de Paris. What is causing such a stir ? The ruin of a historic, famous building, or the destruction of a religious landmark that recalls the country's Christian roots ?
A building can serve as a gathering place for believers: a cathedral, a church, a temple, a simple meeting room. But the Most High God "does not dwell in temples made by the hand of man" (Acts 17. 24). He dwells in the hearts of believers. We are by nature unworthy of his presence, but he wants to make us righteous by faith in Jesus Christ to draw us near to him. He even wants to dwell in us believers. "Don't you know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you ?" (1 Corinthians 3:16). It is a spiritual edifice that cannot be destroyed. "You are built with them to form an indwelling of God in the Spirit". It is Jesus Christ who builds it. He said : "I will build my Church, and the gates of hell will not prevail over it" (Matthew 16. 18). It is worth looking for what God reveals about this in the Bible, in the New Testament.
