God's will
Guard your heart more than anything else, for out of it spring the fountains of life. Proverbs 4:23
To understand what the will of God is, it is necessary to seek it.
The state of our heart is paramount ; the fear of God, humility, obedience, faith are the essential elements : Who is the man who fears the Lord ? The Lord shows him the way he should choose... The Lord confides his secrets to those who fear him (Psalm 25:12,14). To make his will known to us, God places at our disposal the instruments of guidance :
The Bible, the book of divine revelation.
There are commandments and prohibitions, but above all moral and spiritual principles often illustrated by images, characters, particular circumstances. Reading and submitting to the Bible is essential. She is a lamp at my foot, and a light at my path (Psalm 119:105) ; it gives us the true knowledge of God with whom the believer finds joy in walking.
Prayer, an effective way to understand a situation.
Epaphras always fought with prayers that the Colossians would remain perfect and secure in all the will of God (Colossians 4:12).
Consciousness.
Subjective, it can be influenced by three different voices : that of God, that of Satan and that of our carnal desires. It is important to have the conscience illuminated by the Word of God in order to be at ease and at peace in your heart before God (1 Timothy 1:5,19).
Common sense.
The Holy Spirit transforms the way we think, evaluate, decide according to the will of the Lord (2 Timothy 1:7).
Advice from others, sometimes.
We've all been through the stage where you don't like to receive advice ; but the Bible says : He who hears counsel is wise (Proverbs 12:15).
The interpretation of circumstances which, even if they are momentarily contrary, should not be overlooked. We sometimes talk about a door that opens or closes, but is it the Holy Spirit or the devil working (Acts 16:6 ; 1 Thessalonians 2:18) ? To find out, all the guidance instruments must point in the same direction.
God is our Father, he wants the best for us. He is our Shepherd, he wants to lead us and take care of us. So let's trust him !
