Harmful dependence

Monday, April 19, 2021

We too, in fact, were once stupid, rebellious, misguided, slaves to all kinds of passions and pleasures. Titus 3.3

You are the slaves of the master whom you obey, either from sin which leads to death, or from obedience which leads to righteousness. Romans 6:16

Harmful dependence

The addiction, a word so current, depicts a repeated and irrepressible need to do or consume something despite the motivation or efforts to avoid it. It can take many forms (alcohol, game, pornography, drugs...) and always makes people slave and unhappy.

The Bible, without citing this term, evokes it by the words : slaves (John 8.34 ; Romans 6.16-20), to dominate (2 Peter 2.20), etc. If society, in particular the medical world, sees in it a "mental pathology", the Christian adopts the point of view given by the Word of God : Satan always seeks to enslave man to sin, and tirelessly to debase him, to his misfortune. He uses many tactics, often difficult to spot, so subtle and deceptive. Let's be vigilant at all ages !

A bad habit that should be abandoned, a relationship that should be broken... Satan begins by blunting our conscience, in order to better tempt us. Once trapped, we realize, often too late, our state of slavery. Let us not rely on our own strength, let us call on the Lord. It can free us from the addiction trap. Jesus conquered Satan, and even today he wants and can set us free, make us victorious and happy.

"Submit yourselves therefore to God, but resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and he will draw near to you" (James 4, 7, 8).
