Haughty ?

2 Timothy 3.2 - For men will be ... haughty.

We continue to study the "profile" of human beings in recent times, a very realistic profile, don't you think ? Men will be haughty, that is, they will have a very high opinion of themselves, they will have a dismissive and even contemptuous attitude towards others ! In short, pride in all its "splendor".

It is amazing how much a proud man is blind to his own condition. Yet our sinful nature, which finds it so hard to submit, will always try to push that pride forward. So how does this root manifest itself in our daily life ?

One of the first symptoms that one can notice is this determination to always be right and to push things to the extreme so that others recognize it. Anything is good to crush someone who does not agree with him : it involves disdain, contempt, mockery, sometimes insult. The man is ready to put all his human relationships, including those closest to him, on the altar of "I'm right." And even when the evidence of the error is shown, he will hide behind a mountain of apologies rather than admit he is wrong.

A second symptom is the enormous difficulty in submitting to authority. Since the proud thinks themselves superior, they have all the trouble in the world to comply with the discipline. Fear of punishment will force him to bow, but in his heart, it will only be contempt and slander towards the established authorities. Unfortunately many of God's children behave in this way ! Sometimes we could find an excuse for them that they have been under an abusive authority but for the majority of Christians today it is: each one does what they see fit !

My beloved, let us watch over our hearts. Pride is a mortal enemy because God resists the proud. Let’s be careful when the temptation to compare ourselves to others overwhelms us, especially when it leads us to contempt, whatever it is. "Humility precedes glory" Proverbs tell us (Proverbs 15.33) and Paul encourages us to have the feelings of "humility" that were in Jesus Christ (Philippians 2:5-11).
