"Come away in a desert place and rest a little" Marc 6.31
The Bible says that life "can last seventy years, or eighty" (Psalms 90:10, BFC).
If you live quite old, you will spend on average twenty-four years to sleep, twenty years to work, ten years a little in the church and especially on vacation, seven years to eat, six years to travel, four years to fight the diseases and two years to get dressed.
"Do not think that living at full speed gives you more time."
Kierkegaard said : "The occupation is a charm whose victims are always younger so that God does not have the time to train them to the Christian character".
Do not think that living at full speed gives you more time. Certainly, constant activity raises your adrenaline and probably gives you importance but it can become the enemy of your soul. It can hinder your spiritual development by preventing you from thinking and probing your heart. We are not talking here about everyday tasks but about the quality of what you are going through. You can be very busy without being balanced.
A Bible scholar says loneliness is the crucible of transformation. There are three kinds of loneliness :
1. Short moments lived in everyday life
2. Longer times, a few days or more, far from everything
Despite his busy schedule, Jesus used to escape pressure from the crowd to spend time with his father. He said to his disciples : "Come with me [...], in a quiet place and rest."
3. Forced rest
"He makes me rest" (Psalm 23: 2, KJV). Do not wait for God to force you to rest ! Strive for a balanced life.
An application for today
If you feel concerned about this and you have a lack of balance in your life, stop for a moment and take time away from God to help balance your agenda.
