Heal your wounds
“Doctor, heal yourself ! ” Luke 4. 23
In the Old Testament, a priest could not serve in the house of God if he was afflicted with a scab on his skin, which represented, in the eyes of God, an unhealed wound, which could open and bleed (Leviticus 21:20). Why that ? Because if you have a scab or an unhealed wound, you are not insensitive to even light blows. You can't get too close to others in case their unfortunate touch scratches your sensitive skin and lifts the crust of dried blood. You are too fragile, too sensitive, because the fear of seeing it reopen risks sapping your energy. You are also afraid to talk about it, for fear that people will distance themselves from you, which causes you to wear a mask, compartmentalize your life and thus make you less confident. You also risk succumbing to the temptation of wanting to control everything. Worse still, you throw yourself headlong into your work, so eager to please God and serve others that you spend so little time with Him and neglect to take care of yourself. But the Bible says : “Doctor, heal yourself !” Does this mean that people who have lived through difficult, fractured, troubled pasts cannot serve God ? Not at all, quite the opposite is true ! Those who have been broken by life are better able to help those who are suffering today ! But they must first be healed and restored themselves. Jesus said that if a blind man leads another blind man, they both end up in a ditch (Matthew 15:14). It's hard to talk to others about victory when you're living a life of defeat yourself, and it's hard to give them moral support when you're struggling with unresolved emotional issues yourself. If your wounds are still bleeding, you will be unable to help solve other people's problems. It is not abnormal for a Christian to suffer heart wounds, but it is abnormal to do nothing to heal them. Spend time with God and let Him restore you fully so you can help others more effectively.
