"Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, in order to obtain a better resurrection." Hebrews 11: 35
In order to encourage its recipients, the author of the Epistle to the Hebrews describes, in chapter 11, a grandiose panorama of the life of faith lived by men and women of God. But he lacks space to develop his subject ; He contented himself with drawing up a list of brilliant actions accomplished by faith : defeating kings, closing the mouths of lions, healing serious diseases, winning battles ... What heroes ! What exploits !
But the author goes on to give a second, much more surprising list : men and women tortured, wandering, murdered, stoned, imprisoned ... What do those who the world would today call "losers" ?
Yet, according to God, the latter are heroes of faith just as much as the first. The Greek term used for "others" is precise : it refers to people of the same nature, with no qualitative difference with the former. As victors and martyrs, they all received a testimony of their faith (v. 39). Faith is not characterized either by escaping from the edge of the sword or by dying under a sword (verse 37) : it is above all the attitude of the heart that confesses In God, in successes, as in apparent defeats.
We are often quick to judge the quality of the Christian life (ours or that of our brothers and sisters) commensurate with the successes : such a believer has been cured of an a priori incurable cancer ; Another has been the means of dozens of conversions ; Another sees his business thrive ... Indeed, whether we recognize it or not, we believe that the good must first be seen in our earthly life. But God, in his providence, has not promised to protect his people against the trials that all men know ; On the contrary, he announces rather special sufferings for his faithful ones (Acts 14:22).
Therefore, when we have the impression of going from failures to disappointments, let us not lose courage, for the "power [of God] is accomplished in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12: 9) and the Lord will be glorified One day in the life of faith of his children.
