Highway or mountain roas ?

Wednesday August 18, 2021

Jesus said to her : What is written in the law ? What do you read there ? Luke 10. 26

You study the scriptures because you think you have eternal life through them. They are the ones who bear witness about me. John 5.39

Highway or mountain road ?

During a music exam, the teacher made the following reflection to my daughter : "What you have done is very well, the rhythm is respected, the notes are right, but it lacks personalization, we are on a highway". Another candidate got this compliment : "We have the impression of being on a mountain road, and we do not know what landscape we will discover at the next bend".

It reminds me of the way we read the Bible. You can read it correctly, but quickly, as if you already know what you are reading. It is the monotony of the "highway". We can also read it with interest, that is to say, by letting ourselves be penetrated because we read, by wondering about the words, the turns and the meaning of sentences. We then discover many details on which we have gone quickly so far.

The apostle tells us that this word must be mixed with faith to be useful (Hebrews 4. 2). These details will then enlighten our heart and conscience. They will make us see the perfection of his Word, as the immensity of the love of God which exceeds our comprehension and our intelligence. These are the discoveries along the "mountain road".

Let us make stops to pray, "at all times, by the Spirit". And let us not forget that "the word of God is alive and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating until it separates soul and spirit, joints and marrow, it judges the feelings and the thoughts of the heart" (Hebrews 4. 12).
