How can we resist temptations ?

"Having a great high priest who has crossed the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, hold fast our confession ; For we have not a high priest incapable of sympathizing with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in all things in a manner similar to us, except sin." Hebrews 4: 14-15

Jesus Christ lived as a man on earth, but a perfect man. He did not know sin (2 Corinthians 5:21), nor did he commit any sin (1 Pet. 2:22). There was no sin in him (1 John 3: 5) : he always did good and did not sin in thought, word, or action.

The Lord Jesus Christ is our supreme example in the way of resisting temptation. The verse of the day reminds us that he was tempted in all things like us. The three temptations, the covetousness of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, of which the Lord has emerged victorious, summarize the totality of those we may encounter (1 John 2:16).

After the 40 days of fasting Jesus in a desert haunted by wild beasts, the devil sought to persuade him to accomplish his messianic work by taking an easier path.

Jesus did not argue with the devil as Eve did in the past with the serpent ; He only quoted Scripture to him : "It is written ... it is written ... it is written ..." (Matt 4: 7, 10).

The key to victory over temptation is to resist the tempter by the Word of God, the way Jesus did it. For us it is above all to take the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God (Ephesians 16:17). To do this, you must know it, believe it, meditate it, understand it (to a certain extent), memorize it with the help of the Holy Spirit.

It has been said: Jesus could not have been a model if he had defeated the devil by using his divine power. He triumphs by the same weapons that are now at the disposal of the believer: an entire dependence on God, absolute obedience to his Word and unshakeable confidence in his promises.
