"I am the Son of God"

"Jesus answered [the Jews] : Is it not written in your Law : I said, You are gods ? If he calls the gods those to whom the word of God has come (and Scripture can not be destroyed), say to him whom the Father has sanctified and sent into the world : You blaspheme, because I said, I am the Son of God ? "John 10: 34-36

Once again, the Jewish leaders wanted to stone Jesus, this time for the reason that he presented himself as the Son of God. Well, says the Lord, the Scriptures to which you claim to be so attached call "gods" fallible men (Psalm 82: 6). So do not accuse me of blasphemy, I whom the Father has distinguished from all when, at the baptism of John, he declared : "This is my beloved Son, in whom I have found my pleasure." And if that is not enough for you, believe my works which testify that I am what I declare to be.

This title of "Son of God" brings us back to the beginning of John's gospel: he reveals to us that Jesus is the Word become flesh, the only begotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father, who came to make us known God 14-18). He alone, the Father's envoy, could speak of God. No one but he who descended from heaven could bring grace and truth into a world entirely cut off from God.

True, faith was needed to discern the Son of God in this humble and poor man whose modest family origin was known and who did not belong to the proud caste of religious leaders. However, those who were not blinded by the desire to maintain their privileged status at any price had good reason to believe that Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of God : they had the testimony of John the Baptist, the testimony of miracles That Jesus fulfilled, that of the Father Himself of whom we have already spoken, and also that of the Scriptures (John 5: 33-39).

Today, few people dispute the historical existence of Jesus, recognized as an extraordinary man. But only those who have responded to God's command to repent and believe in Jesus Christ discern by faith his glories as the Son of God. Filled with joy, they exclaim with Thomas the disciple : "My Lord and my God !" (John 20:28).
