"I know who I believed." 2 Timothy 1. 12

 
When the apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, he was in prison in Rome. He knows that death is approaching, for, says he : "the time of my departure has come" (2 Tim. 4: 6). He feels alone. Demas, one of his collaborators, "loved the present century" (v. 10), he abandoned it and went to Thessalonica. He let himself be tempted by the world, perhaps out of fear of dangers and renunciations. Crescens left for Galatia, Titus for Dalmatia. Luke, "the beloved physician" (Col. 4:14), is the only one who maintains contact with Paul in Rome, for the apostle has just delegated Tychicus, "the beloved brother, faithful servant and companion of Slavery in the Lord "at Ephesus, in order to replace Timothy, who is to come to Rome with him (Col. 4: 7). The destitution of the apostle is so complete that he must ask Timothy to bring him a cloak left at Carpus's house in Troade, more than a thousand miles from Rome.
All these changes could have destabilized the strongest. In addition, a certain Alexander had shown much wickedness towards Paul by opposing his words with fierceness. Perhaps he had calumniated the apostle by false declarations. But the most painful of the trials was that no one had come to assist him the first time he had had to present his defense. Among the Romans, it was customary for friends or relatives to attend an accused in court. All had abandoned him. He had remained alone before his accusers (2 Timothy 4: 9-18).
What is Paul's attitude in these overwhelming circumstances where everything seems to have failed ? He remains firm and confident, for he knows who he believed. He is convinced that his situation is in the best possible hands, those of Jesus Christ.
He trusts his Savior and Lord who delivered him "from the lion's mouth" and will deliver him "from every evil work and keep him for his heavenly kingdom." (2 Tim. ). No one can shake his faith. Even in the face of death, he is without fear, for his salvation is a certainty. The Apostle is ready to leave this world as the victor.
That is why Paul can finish his letter on a note of praise : "To him glory for ever and ever. Amen "(v.18).
