Christ also suffered, once and for all for sins. He, the righteous, suffered for the unjust in order to lead us to God. 1 Peter 3.18

In its place

"He agreed to die so that an innocent man could live." This word was spoken during Arnaud Beltrame's eulogy on March 28, 2018. This gendarmerie officer offered to take the place of a hostage held by a terrorist in a supermarket, and was seriously injured before succumbing to his injuries. The sacrifice of this courageous man aroused much admiration and emotion throughout France.

Faced with this example of dedication, how can we not think about the work of Jesus Christ ? Jesus offered his life, not instead of that of an innocent person, but to save all the guilty eternally, if he believed in him !

The Bible unequivocally declares that we are all guilty, condemned by the righteousness of God : "The wages of sin is death." Fortunately this affirmation is followed by another : "But the free gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 6:23). If the inflexible justice of God condemns us all, his immense grace proposes to save us. But for this salvation to be presented to us today, Jesus Christ had to take our place under the judgment of the holy God; through his death we have life.

This freed hostage will never forget the sacrifice of Arnaud Beltrame ! Let us never forget the love of Jesus who loved us until death to offer us eternal life near him.
