In rest mode !

Hebrews 4:11 - Let us therefore strive to enter into this rest...

The least we can say is that our century is not an easy one. I think that in the history of mankind there have never been so many people who are stressed, overwhelmed with fatigue and depressed. Yet one would have thought that technology would have made life more pleasant because everything has accelerated : travel, household chores, communications, available time... More time and yet less rest !

The author of the Letter to the Hebrews invites us to enter into the rest of God. He is not speaking here of the rest that awaits us in the Hereafter, but of the spiritual and emotional rest that exists on this earth. As it says in our verse for the day, it takes effort. Effort and rest, is it compatible ? Yes ! This search for God's rest will be successful because it is his promise. But what is the effort ?

Psalm 127.2 tells us : “It is in vain for you to get up in the morning, to go to bed late, and to eat the bread of sorrows ; He gives as much to his loved ones while they sleep ”. The effort is to put God in all the circumstances of our life. If we are one of his loved ones, he will work for us. It doesn't mean that we won't have to work anymore, but it does mean that the stress of our modern world will leave us.

To put God in our circumstances is to believe that He is our boss, that He is our property owner, that He is our banker, that He is our civil authority... in short, that He is above everything and that He controls everything ! There is no point in eating the bread of pain of worry, He takes care of everything. He will not seek our own pleasure but what is best for us, which is by far excellence.

Before we start this day I would like you to be encouraged by this verse : “Therefore, it is with confidence that we can say : The Lord is my help, I will not be afraid ; what can a man do to me ?” (Hebrews 13:10).
