In the School of God (7) The music room

"And David and the captains of the host put aside for service ... those who were to prophesy with harps, and lutes, and cymbals... All these were ... in the song of the house of the LORD, with cymbals, lutes, and harps, for the service of the house of God, under the direction of the king. And their number, with their brethren, instructed in the art of singing to the Lord, all the experts, was two hundred and eighty-eight." 1 Chronicles 25: 1-8

Today we finish our visit of the school of God by the music room. The art of singing to the Lord is an art that is taught and learned.

Before moving on to a practical exercise, Teacher recalls the principles David had established under his direction.

David had set aside for the service of the house of God two hundred and eighty-eight men "instructed in the art of singing to the Lord." They were accompanied by harps, lutes and cymbals. Masters and pupils were chosen by lot to perform their duties in groups of twelve, regardless of their social status. They had been instructed in the art of singing to the Lord, not only in the realm of music, but also in the Word of God, for they prophesied, that is, they brought by chant a message on the part of God.

The song was also used by believers from the first days of the Church. At the end of the first century a councilor of the Roman Emperor told him of the manners of the Christians : "They sing to each other hymns to Christ as to their God."

To sing together by the Spirit the same words, at the same rhythm, with its own affective shade, for the same purpose, has an effect that goes far beyond mere words. The song engages our whole being in praise. There is a way to unite a group in worship, prayer, praise. He gives wings to the words. It allows to engrave the Word in the hearts. He sends down the biblical text to the depths of the soul and the spirit. It gives everyone the opportunity to express his inner attitudes and experiences, usually better than he could do alone by his own words.

Song is the only art that is mentioned in the sky ; so much to learn and practice it already on earth for the glory of God !
