Incomparable words - Proposed reading : John 7. 37-52

All the people listened to him, hanging on his lips. Luke 19. 48

Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, like a hammer that pulverizes a rock ? Jeremiah 23. 29

Incomparable words - Proposed reading : John 7. 37-52

The religious authorities in Jerusalem decided to have Jesus arrested. They send guards to seize him. They return soon after, without Jesus. What happened ? What reasons do they give for their failure ? They just say : "No one has ever spoken like this man !" (John 7. 46).

As they left to look for Jesus, the guards were filled with prejudice against him. Most of the people, the older and more educated in the city, viewed Jesus of Nazareth as an impostor. He was accused of being a blasphemer, of casting out demons by the leader of the demons... Such was the contempt for Jesus, contempt that these men shared.

Why then were they unable to stop the Lord ? How could their attitude change so much that they dared to come back without the one they had to stop ? They had heard the words of Jesus, which no one else could have spoken.

The authorities then accused the guards of being deceived, but one of the leaders, Nicodemus, replied that you had to listen to Jesus first before rejecting him. The religious leaders then wryly asked Nicodemus if he, too, was a disciple of Jesus.

What Nicodemus said is still true. Why reject the gospel before reading or listening to it ? The Word of God has this strength to lead us to the Savior. It is by reading it that one comes to faith. It has its own strength of conviction.
