Jesus from house to house (10) In Jerusalem, in the house of the high priest

"They took [Jesus] and led him away to the house of the high priest. Now Peter followed from afar." Luke 22. 54

Jesus went from village to village, from house to house; But never from palace to palace, except to be judged.

After his arrest in the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus is first led by the company of soldiers, the commander and the Jewish guards in the official residence of the high priest. Jesus does not oppose any resistance to this numerous troop, made up of Jews and pagans. All remain blind to the dignity of their prisoner.

Jesus is first questioned by the former High Priest Anne. Although he was deposed from the supreme office of Judaism by the Romans, he remained the most influential religious leader and still bore the title of high priest. According to the law, the high priest kept his charge until his death. During this informal preliminary investigation, Anne seeks to gather elements that will condemn Jesus. At the hypocritical interrogation of the high priest, Jesus has nothing to answer. He had publicly given his testimony (John 18: 19-23). It is therefore up to his judges to prove the evil !

No humiliation is spared to our Lord. He appears bound to a man who had discredited the supreme office of Judaism. According to testimony of the time, Anne was arrogant, cunning, and miserly. And in the courtyard of the palace, Peter renounces his Master for the first time (John 18:17).

Another expeditious interrogation followed shortly after with Caiaphas, the high priest in office by decision of Rome. Anne's son-in-law, he probably lives in the same palace (John 18: 15-24). And there, Peter, in the court, denies his Master a second and a third time.

At daybreak, the formal process of Jesus takes place in the Sanhedrin, under the royal portico (Luke 22, 66, 67). Trial of pure form with a verdict established beforehand! The members of this iniquitous tribunal then lead Jesus to Pilate, but they do not enter his palace for fear of being defiled.

A few days before, Jesus had openly manifested himself to the Jewish people as his Messiah-King (Mark 11: 1-11). The doors of the palaces of the royal city being closed to him, Jesus spent the night at Bethany. They will be open to him only to judge him.

Where is the palace and throne of the Lord Jesus Christ today ? In the hearts of those who love him. Let's shout it !
