Jesus from house to house (12) In the house of his Father

"Let not your heart be troubled ; You believe in God, believe in me also. In the house of my Father there are many mansions ; If it were otherwise, I would have told you, for I will prepare you a place. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you with me, that where I am, you also may be." John 14: 1-3

In the upper room in Jerusalem, the tension is high among the disciples. Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, ate the passover with them, denounced the traitor Judas ; He now comes to tell them that he is going away and gives them the command to love one another. Peter makes a point of his own devotion, without taking notice of the Lord's warning : "The cock will not sing that thou hast denied me three times" (John 13:38).

Peter had interrupted Jesus with a question : "Lord, where are you going ?" (V. 36). The Lord answers now. When he leaves his disciples, he will not let them be abandoned. He will precede them in a place he will prepare for them in the house of the Father.

God never placed man in an unprepared place. The garden of Eden had been planted before the man was received (Gen. 2: 8). The land of Canaan was overflowing with riches before the Israelites occupied it (Deut. 6: 10-11). A place is not only prepared for Jesus who goes to his Father, but for all his people. All these places will be occupied one day. They are reserved for believers.

One can guess the astonishment of the disciples : how could they rise from the earth to heaven ? Jesus reassures them : "I will return and I will take you with me, so that where I am, you, you are also".

From house to house on this earth, Jesus brings us to his Father's house. The Bible gives us little details about the sky. But what makes it a place of happiness is the presence of the Lord, the Lamb of God. And he himself claims for his own joy the presence of his family with him. What comfort ! In the house of the Father, my place is ready and Jesus desires my company ! What a love !
