Jesus under the wrath of God

Lord God of my salvation, day and night I cry before you. May my prayer reach you ! Give ear to my supplications, for my soul is saturated with calamities, and my life is near to hell. I am counted among those who descend to the grave, I am like a man who has no more strength. I am lying among the dead, like those who are slain and lying in the grave, to those whom you no longer remember and who are separated from you. Psalm 88:2-6

In this psalm, Jesus is portrayed, on the cross, suffering the wrath of God against sin, when he is cursed in our place, as it is written : He who is hanged is cursed by God. (Deuteronomy 21:23).

He did not commit any sin ; he, like God, has a horror of sin ; and yet he suffers death, that is, separation from God, because of sin ; he feels, to his very core, the terrible wrath of the God in whose love he has always lived. Christ... become a curse for us (Galatians 3:13).

The Savior can say : You have cast me into a deep pit, into darkness, into the depths (Psalm 88:7). He is weighed down with all the waves of God's wrath, so that we may be delivered from the judgment we deserved. Glory to his name !

Already on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus is distressed when he anticipates the cross : Now my soul is troubled. And what will I say ? Father, deliver me from this hour ? But that is why I have come until this hour. Father, reveal the glory of your name (John 12:27,28).

In Gethsemane, in the full freedom of a Son before his Father, he asks that the cup be passed away from him, so terrible is it. But, in the perfection of his obedience, in the perfection of his love for his Father and for men, he submits without a murmur until he surrenders his spirit to his Father, this love will sustain him on the cross.

Yes, thinking about what our Savior suffered in those terrible hours makes us better understand how much he loved his Father and how much he loved us. It also makes us more serious about the sin and sins that cost him so dearly.
