Jesus victorious

Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and he was led by the Spirit into the desert, where he was tempted by the devil for forty days... After having tempted him in all these ways, the devil away from him until a favorable moment. Luke 4:1,13

When a strong and well-armed man guards his house, what he has is safe. But, if someone stronger than him comes along and subdues him, he takes away all the weapons in which he trusted, and he distributes his spoils. Luke 11:21,22

God created man in his own image and gave him a position of sovereignty over the earth and over all living things (Genesis 1:28-30). Man lived under the direct authority of God. Satan, by bringing down our first parents, interposed himself between man and the Eternal ; since then, men are subject to him.

During the following generations, Satan continued his work of seduction, with the frequent result of the arrival of tyrants whose bloody violence has strongly marked history. Fortunately, many witnesses of God have also punctuated this story, but none could overcome the one Jesus calls the strong man.

How to put an end to this situation ? No human being has ever been able to confront Satan. Like the army of Israel before Goliath, all of humanity finds itself powerless before Satan. The man Christ Jesus took up the challenge. Like David with five smooth stones, one of which was enough to kill the giant, Jesus used the Word. By quoting only one of the five books of Moses, that of Deuteronomy, Jesus bound Satan during the temptation in the desert (Matthew 4:1-11).

During his ministry, Jesus demonstrated his power over Satan by casting out demons. In this, he plundered his goods by delivering men. At the end of his ministry, there was the last fight. And just when all seemed lost, when the power of darkness seemed to triumph (Luke 22:53), Jesus occupied the strongman's palace. By his death, he rendered powerless the devil who held the power of death (Hebrews 2:14) and snatched the keys from him (Revelation 1:18).

By faith, we make this victory of Jesus our own. Nothing in heaven or on earth can separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:39). The death of our body is only a “passage” that leads us to Jesus.
