Keep your eyes fixed on certain stones !

“Joshua set up in Gilgal the twelve stones which they had taken out of the Jordan.” Joshua 4. 20

The city of Jericho was an impregnable fortress, so God offered the people of Israel an original plan : He commanded them to walk around the walls every day before returning to the camp at Gilgal in the evening. From there, the Israelites could see the Jordan River that they had crossed and the stone monument that Joshua had erected on the shore. Gilgal was also the place where the Israelites had been circumcised for the first time since leaving Egypt. There, they had agreed to die to their flesh and their past, and had committed to obey God. Why was it important for them to keep their eyes on these stones ? To remember that they were to walk in faith and obedience and ignore their fears and doubts. The stones of the ramparts of Jericho would crumble, God had promised. These ramparts were a monument to the glory of human intelligence and ingenuity. The stones piled up in Gilgal formed a monument to the glory of God and of His power. They were also a vibrant testimony in the eyes of the nations of the divine power which protects and guides His people : “So that all the peoples of the earth will know that the hand of the Lord is mighty, and you will always fear the Lord, your God” (Joshua 4:24). Today we see other ramparts than those of Jericho. Before you face those who stand in front of you, remember the so-called insurmountable obstacles He has allowed you to overcome in the past. And repeat with sincerity : “Yes, happiness and grace will be with me every day of my life !” (Psalm 23. 6). The children of Israel saw the walls of Jericho crumble because they obeyed divine orders without questioning or doubting them, because each night they remembered all that God had accomplished in the past to support them ! Keep your eyes fixed on these same stones !
