Keep your perfume for Him !

John 12: 7 - Jesus said then : "Leave her : It is for the day of my burial that she was to keep this perfume".

As Jesus announced, we still continue to talk about Mary who had anointed her with perfume today. Our text says that she had to keep this perfume for Jesus ! Her brother Lazarus had passed away before, but she had not used it for him although he really needed it because he smelled (John 11:39). Judas would have liked to resell the perfume to give the fruit of the sale to the poor, but Jesus takes it back. Mary had received, probably in a prophetic way, that she was to keep this perfume for Jesus and that is what she did.

Even though it is laudable to be a blessing to one's family and to the poor, there are things God gives us that are intended for Him. Isn't He the consumer of faith (Hebrews 12.2)? Doesn't He entrust us with talents so that He recovers them with at least an interest (Matthew 25:27) ?

The world is going to push for what belongs to God, even with praiseworthy things. Unfortunately many of the gifts of God are stolen to serve the glory of man, even though they have been entrusted for Him. How many artistic talents, intellectual capacities, sporting gifts... are put at the service of the spirit of the world instead of the service of God ? When the Lord comes to us, will He find the “investment” He has placed in us, or will He be squandered ?

You might think that Marie's family was well off, but do you know a lot of women who would sacrifice a perfume of this price (almost a year's salary) ? Especially since she did not offer it to the Lord sparingly but she poured it out on Him.

My beloved, if we want our "reputation" to fill the sky and be talked about in two thousand years, let us have this spirit of sacrifice ! Let us sacrifice, in complete worship, what God has given us for Him.
