Know and explain the world
All have turned away, together they have become perverted : there is none who does good, not even one. Romans 3:12
The French philosopher Léon Brunschvicg (Les Âges de l'Intelligence, PUF 1934-1947) states : "The less you know the world, the more easily you explain it".
The facts seem to prove him right : quick explanations abound, often contradictory... Religions also try their hand at this, trying to give consistency to the functioning of humanity. Or rather to its dysfunctions !
Because the problem is there : all the attempts at explanations in the world are confronted with the existence of evil. Evil is present everywhere, in every human group, in every heart, regardless of economic level, political system, culture or religion.
The Bible asserts that the problem is in the human heart, and stems from man's desire for independence from God. We come into the world separated from God, determined to live the life that pleases us. This desire for independence, the Bible calls it sin. Evil results from it, and makes this interior attitude visible.
To truly explain the world, we must recognize that sin is universal and that the source of the problem is separation from God. However, let's not stop there ! Let us recognize ourselves as sinners.
Better yet, humbly recognize that we need to surrender to God in order to be healed.
