Let's fear...

I will recompense them for their works... for they have given up on the Lord. Hosea 4.9-10 (French Rabbinate translation)

The Segond translation says : they have forsaken the Eternal and his commandments and the original : they have ceased to listen to him. It is quite clear that the reproaches of God communicated by the pen of Hosea are not addressed to people who know nothing of God or to unbelievers. They will be accountable for what they know or don't know. Hosea speaks to people who give up, give up, stop caring about God and his commandments. They knew ; they know ; they listened... but did not persevere. They've given up, given up on what God has revealed. No doubt they have not forgotten his promises and still claim them. But they reassure themselves not to hear his warnings.

I am often amazed at the way we imagine ourselves destined to reign with Christ or to inherit a crown while paying less and less attention to his requirements of holiness.

This seems to me to be one of the more subtle traps of the Adversary. Certainly we are right in thinking that God will not take away what he has given. But it is easy to mistakenly believe oneself to be born of God when one has been satisfied with a purely intellectual adhesion.

Perseverance is the only clear proof of our birth into the life of God.

Otherwise, let us be afraid of waking up too late from our illusions.
