Let's proclaim the truth ! (2)

“They persevered in the teaching of the apostles, in fellowship, in the breaking of bread and in prayers.” Acts 2:42

What advice does the apostle offer us to stay grounded in the truth ?

1- Instead of debating doctrines, let us try to stick to what the Bible teaches us. Jesus is the truth and our faith revolves around this affirmation. To accept a compromise between what the Word of God tells us and the prevailing opinions in our society, or to suggest that biblical truth must adapt to our times or to seek a “symbolic” interpretation of passages in the Bible that are clear and unambiguous is evidence of spiritual blindness. Satan is the one who introduces doubt by questioning the veracity of the Word of God. When Jesus declares : “I have come into the world to bear witness to the truth. Whoever belongs to the truth listens to what I say" (John 18.37), Pilate responds like so many people today : "What is the truth ?" (v. 38). Let us not forget that our responsibility is to know and teach the truth (Hosea 4.6 and Titus 2.1).

2- Do not neglect the truth as it is stated in the Bible. Contemporary thought is centered on a simple axiom : "there is no absolute truth, but several truths", which philosophy teaches as being inescapable evidence. Now Paul is not addressing unbelievers, but Timothy who has the duty to teach Bible truth. Pastors who do not believe in the “literal” truth of the Bible will find it difficult to preach the truth in all its depth. The apostle describes them as people with itchy ears (v.3) ! This is the reason why “they will turn their ears away from the truth” (v.3).

3- Do not fall into the trap of “diluting” the truth, under any pretext whatsoever. Proclaiming the truth is at the heart of our mission as a believer. But “proclaiming” suggests that our voice should be both strong and authoritative.
