There was a woman possessed by a spirit which had crippled her for eighteen years ; she was bent over, and couldn't straighten up at all. When he saw her, Jesus spoke to her and said to her, Woman, you are delivered from your infirmity. And he laid his hands on her. Instantly she straightened up, and glorified God. Luke 13. 11-13
Let's raise our heads
For eighteen years, this woman had been bent over backwards. What could she see. Nothing but her feet and the earth she walked on. Impossible to look up to look at the sky !
This story, like many others in the Gospel, has symbolic significance. From experience, we know that some burdens can be very heavy. And it's normal for someone carrying a big bag on their back to lean forward to keep their balance. Do we not sometimes be unable to detach ourselves from our earthly concerns and be overwhelmed by them ? What grabs us ? Our personal problems ? Worries caused by our profession or our family ? Maybe an addiction ? God invites us to lay them before him and lift our heads up high.
This woman, then, had been bent to the ground for eighteen years. But Jesus sees her and calls her. As soon as he touches her, the power that comes from the hands of Jesus allows him to straighten up. Then another horizon opens up for her: she sees Jesus, she sees her own surroundings, she sees the sky... which leads her to glorify God.
Let the Lord Jesus touch your heart. If you accept Him by faith as your personal Savior, your life will be completely changed. Life's problems won't go away, but you can look up to heaven, and Jesus Christ will fill your eyes.
