Let's stay steadfast

My beloved brothers and sisters, be firm, unwavering. Work better and better at the work of the Lord. 1 Corinthians 15:58

The great tremors of this world can affect us personally. The company where we work can be shaken, with the risk of losing our jobs. Our couple, our family, our local church can be shaken. Everything can be shaken down here. It is then important for us believers to know that which is unshakeable and to become ourselves stable in Christ.

We have already seen in the previous page that Jesus Christ is the unshakeable Rock on which we must base our life with faith.

The apostle Paul reminds the Corinthians of the solid foundation of their faith : the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, which will also be that of believers at his coming (1 Corinthians 15). He urges them to stand firm, unshakeable. This is why we are firmly building on this foundation.

The apostle Peter writes to scattered and suffering believers. He encourages them by turning their eyes to the future : The God of all grace... when you have suffered a little while... will establish you on an unshakable foundation (1 Peter 5:10). The grace of God will keep us securely (1 Peter 1:13).

Several Old Testament texts also teach us to be steadfast :

David, subject to the rebellion of his son Absalon, betrayed by his friend and adviser Achitophel, gives us in Psalm 55 his deep feelings. In the midst of a storm, he sings of his confidence : I cry out to God... He will hear my voice (v. 17, 18). He adds : Commit your lot to the Lord, and he will uphold you. He will never let the righteous stumble (v. 23).

In Psalm 16 David, again, nearing death, writes : When he is on my right hand, I am not moved (v. 8.)

The author of Psalm 121 looks up to the top of the mountains, God Himself, from where his help comes. So he gets this reassuring answer : Don't let your foot stumble.

How to end without recalling this promise which resists the greatest catastrophes : Even if the mountains moved away, even if the hills were shaken, my love will not depart from you and my peace covenant will not be shaken, says the one who have compassion on you, the Eternal (Isaiah 54:10).
