My son, give me your heart. Proverbs 23. 26
I will give you a new heart and I will put a new spirit within you. Ezekiel 36. 26
Living sacrifice
In the southern United States, a missionary preached to a group in the forest. He was talking about Jesus, the good Shepherd who came into the world to seek and save those who were lost. He also told them how the Savior had prayed earnestly in the Garden of Gethsemane, in anticipation of His crucifixion. He described how he was taken by men and subjected to infamous treatment, and then abandoned by God, when he suffered and died for us.
Then an Indian approached the missionary and, with tears in his eyes, asked him :
- Did Jesus also die for me, poor Indian that I am ? I cannot give Jesus land, but I will give him my dog and my gun.
The missionary gently replied that Jesus expected something quite different from him.
- Well, I'll give him my dog, my gun, and my woolen blanket. I can't give him anything more. I give Jesus everything I have.
The preacher repeated what he had just said. The poor man lowered his head sadly, thinking. Suddenly he raised his head more confidently and said :
- This is the Indian himself. Will Jesus want him ?
Have we had this wonderful experience of surrendering ourselves completely to Jesus ? Then, like the apostle Paul, we will be able to say sincerely and with joy : "It is no longer I who live, it is Christ who lives in me ; and what I now live in my body, I live in faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me" (Galatians 2:20).
