Magnify the Lord !

“You will not make sacred sculptures for yourself.” Exodus 20. 4

An electron microscope magnifies tiny objects which can then be better observed, analyzed and understood. Likewise, if you magnify the Lord, you increase your understanding of His character, of His personality. The more you understand His purposes for you, and His will becomes clearer. By exalting His name, you focus your mind on His Person, His greatness, His omnipotence, you forget your limitations and lessen the importance of your problems. When Jesus taught His disciples to pray He pointed out the need to glorify God by beginning and ending our prayer : “Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come... For it is Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory for all ages. Amen !” (Matthew 6.9, 13 NEG79). This echoes David's famous statement : “Shout for joy in honor of the Lord, inhabitants of all the earth ! Serve the Lord with joy, come gladly into his presence ! Know that the Lord is God ! It is he who made us, and we belong to him : we are his people, the flock of which he is the shepherd. Enter its gates with gratitude, its courts with songs of praise !” (Ps 100. 1-4). By magnifying, celebrating His name, we learn to draw closer to Him and to make Him the undisputed Master of our life. Eugene Peterson, in his paraphrase of the Bible (The Message) translates Paul's words as follows : “God raised Jesus from the dead and gave Him a throne in the depths of the heavens, with responsibility for managing the march of the universe, from the most distant galaxies to the governments of every land, no name or power is beyond His control. And not just in the present but also for all eternity. Everything has been entrusted to Him, without exception. It is He who has the last word in all things. Christ reigns over all and in all...” (Ephesians 6. 20-23). His Word for you today is “Magnify the Lord !”
