Make the choice of optimism ! (2)
“Focus your attention on all that is honorable… on all that is true… on all that is righteous and pure, all that can be appreciated and valued.” Philippians 4. 8
Do you suffer from a tendency to pessimism ? Have the hardships you went through, the disappointments you have experienced so far, convinced you that nothing good can happen to you. You have forged an attitude of mistrust and pessimism. Do you want to fight this negative attitude that is undermining your life ? Psychiatrist Paul Meier wrote : “Attitudes are just expressions of thoughts that you have become used to. But habits can be changed. New habits can be learned. You just have to repeat an action and it becomes a habit." To overcome pessimism, you must change your thoughts and then change your behavior. Focus your mind on what God can do, instead of seeing everything in a negative light. Avoid the company of those who are likely to discourage you. The Word of God advises us to fix our gaze on things honorable, pure and true, worthy of our esteem and appreciation. Be upfront with others and let them know that you want to fight your pessimistic attitude. Accept their advice when they expose your thoughts and let you know how negative they are. Being optimistic means placing your hope in the One who can never disappoint you. God created us to live on hope. But being optimistic is a choice. David wrote : “Why be downcast, my soul, and moan inside me ? Hope in God, for I will praise him again! He is my salvation and my God.” Becoming optimistic is possible if you have the right attitude. President Harry Truman once said : “The pessimist creates difficulties out of his opportunities. The optimist creates opportunities out of his difficulties !" Yes, you can “all things in Him who strengthen you [Christ]” (Philippians 4:13).
