(Jesus) was taken up into heaven, after giving orders by the Spirit to the apostles he had chosen ; who also, after suffering, presented himself alive, with a many of evidence certain : for 40 days he showed himself to them and spoke to them about matters concerning the kingdom of God. Acts 1, 2, 3
Many of evidence certain
After his resurrection, Jesus did not appear before the authorities who condemned him, nor before the people who demanded his crucifixion. But on the first day of the week following Passover (for us, Sunday), he appears to his people five times with "many evidence certain" of his resurrection :
- Before his empty tomb, he reveals himself to Mary of Magdala (John 20 11-18) and is responsible for announcing his resurrection to the disciples.
- He goes to meet the women returning from the tomb, and sends them to ask his brothers to join him in Galilee : "There they will see me", he says (Matthew 28. 8-10).
- He appears to Peter, but we do not know anything about this private interview (Luke 24 13-31).
- In the evening, he stands among the apostles and invites them to touch him. He eats in front of them and shows them that all that the Scriptures foretold about him have been fulfilled (Luke 24: 36-49).
At Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit on believers attests that Jesus is risen, glorified with God (Acts 2:32, 33). The apostles claim many times to have witnessed the Lord's resurrection. This is the central point of their message in proclaiming the gospel. The apostle Paul preached thus : "If with your mouth you recognize Jesus as Lord, and if you believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10, 9, 10).
