Maturity takes time

When Abraham was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said to him : I am Almighty God ; walk in front of me and be honest. Genesis 17.1

God appeared to Abraham, then ninety-nine years old, and asked him to be perfect. You may be thinking that "Only Jesus was perfect" !

The Hebrew word translated in Genesis 17.1 as perfect is "tamiyim", which means complete, whole and blameless.

"God sees far beyond who we are now, and he is patient with us."

In other words, God was asking him to be mature. God recognized that this was what would happen despite the mistake of taking Hagar as a companion. He knew that Abraham would become all he had called him to be. "God knew that Abraham was going through a process of maturity.

God says the same about you and me. He sees well beyond who we are now, and he is patient with us. There are people who wonder why it takes so long for God to fulfill His promises ; the time it takes is often a function of our immaturity to receive them.

An action for today

The time it takes for you to benefit from the Word of God depends in particular on the development of your faith. The process of maturity includes the ability to listen as much as possible to the voice of the Lord and to do as he asks. It takes longer depending on the person. Be patient !
