"Jesus spoke to them again : I am the light of the world ; He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. "John 8: 12
At the beginning of creation, the earth is in darkness. God's first intervention on this chaos, desolation and emptiness is to call light to existence. From then on, the creative acts of God succeed each other wonderfully.
The man without God is also desolate and empty. He is unable to answer the fundamental questions that confront him. What is the meaning of my life ? What future after death ? Yet, for thousands of years, philosophers have been reflecting on these questions, without being able to provide the definitive answer that humanity expects.
It is in the person of Jesus that "the light has come into the world". He brings the Son of God the answer to these anguishing questions. He reveals the love of God and accomplishes on the cross all that is necessary to restore the relationship between men and God so that his love may flow over them. But "men have loved darkness better than light, for their works were evil" (John 3:19).
Humanity therefore remains in the darkness of which the devil is the prince, of the darkness which thickens ever more. More than ever, men realize that the ideologies they invent successively lead only to repeated disappointments. Left to themselves, they have no future.
But those who believe in Jesus and follow him, those can walk in the light of life. They possess the life of Christ and can know the thoughts of God on all important matters, thanks to the Bible and the action of the Holy Spirit in them.
Jesus is the answer to the questions they asked themselves. Their purpose is to please God and to love their neighbor "in action and in truth" (1 John 3:18). They receive God's intelligence and strength to do His will. They rejoice that their lives now have meaning. And they know that a blessed future awaits them for eternity near their Savior.
