The Eternal remembers us : he will bless, he will bless the house of Israel, he will bless the house of Aaron. He will bless those who fear the Lord, small and great. Psalm 115. 12, 13

Me, I will bless them

In 1979, archaeologist Gabriel Barkay and his team discovered two small silver scrolls in a burial cave near the Old City of Jerusalem. In 2004, after meticulous analysis, scholars confirmed these biblical texts were the oldest ever found. They contain the inscription of the triple blessing that God had asked Moses to say to his people : "May the Eternal bless you and keep you ! May the Eternal make his face shine upon you, and may he be gracious to thee ! May the Eternal turn his face toward thee, and give thee peace ! (Deuteronomy 6. 24-26).

These two small scrolls were buried around 600 years BC and found 2,500 years later. Isn't it touching to know that the oldest biblical fragments discovered to date speak of God's desire to bless, to do us good ?

Today it is still the same God who speaks to us, and he has not changed : he still and always wants our good. It's not us who can bless, it's God. Christian friends, through prayer we become channels for asking God's blessing on those we present to him.

What blessings can we wish for others ? Material prosperity as in Old Testament times ? This would be to forget that our citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3. 20). Christian blessings are linked to Christ : peace, joy, knowledge of the will of God, the desire to follow Jesus, the happiness of being his witnesses, the strength to serve him, the hope of being with him.
