Meeting with Jesus : Thomas

Thomas answered [to Jesus] : My Lord and my God ! John 20:28

In his letter to the Philippians, the apostle Paul sums up in a few lines the journey of Jesus Christ : from divine glory to the most profound humiliation to return to divine glory (See proposed reading) By his death on Cross, Jesus fully accomplished the will of God : he took upon himself the sins of the world and opened the way to eternal life. As a result, God raised him to the highest place and bestowed on him the name which is above all names (Philippians 2:9).

What's that name ? It is that of Lord, understood in its highest sense. This is the name reserved in the Old Testament for God himself (Isaiah 45.5).

Thomas does not yet understand all that Jesus accomplished. But a week after the resurrection, seeing Jesus who shows him his hands with the mark of the nails of the crucifixion, he no longer doubts. A pious Jew, he knows that to call a man "God" is blasphemy deserving of death. But he does not hesitate to call the man Jesus who is there before him my Lord and my God !

Nearly two thousand years after these events, we do not need to see as Thomas and the other apostles saw. Their testimony, preserved throughout the New Testament, is quite clear : Jesus Christ, dead and risen is Lord and God. Believe it with all our heart !
