Mercury and the sun

Commit your fate to the Eternal, and he will sustain you. Psalm 55:22

On May 7, 2003, for 5 hours, the planet Mercury slowly passed in front of the solar disk, but due to its small size, this did not cause a solar eclipse on the earth. Also, most of us have not seen or felt anything. Only those who were warned and who had a suitable observation instrument could see the planet, like a small black dot, slowly crossing the orange disc.

The planet Mercury (whose diameter is about half that of the earth) would seem huge to us if it were placed on the earth ! But why didn't it disrupt our sunshine ? Because it is relatively close to the sun and because the sun is huge compared to it.

Aren't our worries, our difficulties a bit like the planet Mercury ? When we look at them closely, they are enormous, they crush us, they can veil the Lord from us. If we bring them to him, they are before him like a pinhead before the sun.

Certainly, the apostle Paul himself was sometimes overburdened (2 Corinthians 1:8), crushed, exhausted, to the point of despairing of preserving life ; but always and everywhere his hope was in God. That is why, from the depths of his prison, he wrote words that we still hear : Do not worry about anything, but, in everything, make your needs known to God. Nothing is too big or too small for his tender care.

The apostle Peter, who endured many sufferings for his Master, from Pentecost until his martyrdom, can also tell us again : Cast all your cares on him, for he himself takes care of you. Let us place with confidence in his hands, large and strong, what oppresses and overwhelms us. So then, even in suffering, Christ will shine on us.

O Sovereign Shepherd, On you rests,

Who holds us in your hand, entrusting you, Lord,

That always our heart In peace all things.
