More generous than expected

In the spring of 1875, Hudson Taylor, founder of the Christian Mission to China, was on the platform at Brighton station, waiting for the train to take him back to London. He was accosted by a Russian prince, Count Bobrinsky. The latter had recently heard him preach and offered to travel with him.

- But I am traveling in third class, said the missionary.

- My ticket allows me to do the same, was the answer.

They were alone in their compartment, and immediately the count took out his wallet, saying :

- Let me give you something for your work in China.

Glancing at the check handed to him, Taylor felt there must be some mistake : it was a very large sum.

- Did you think you would give me five pounds ? he said ; let me give you that check back, it's fifty pounds.

"I can't take it back," replied the donor, no less surprised. I meant to give you five pounds, but God must have wanted you to get fifty, I can't take it back.

Impressed by this incident, H. Taylor, arrived in London, immediately went to the mission center, where precisely a prayer meeting was being held. A payment had to be made in China and forty-nine pounds were missing to make it. Those who knew of the situation had felt the need to pray especially for this, and while they were praying, H. Taylor arrived and put the check for fifty pounds on the table.
