My God !

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me ? Matthew 27. 46

My God !

These two words form an expression that we often hear. What do they mean ? What does it mean to me ? Is it really an appeal to the supreme God in the face of a misfortune or a problem that is beyond us ? Does God suddenly come to mind in such and such a situation ? Or is it just two words uttered on the spur of the moment without our being penetrated by the reality of its existence ?

The third commandment of the Law enjoins us not to pronounce the name of God in vain, that is to say lightly or to deceive (Exodus 20:7). And if these two words became the beginning of an authentic prayer...

With force, in the Old Testament, the author of Psalm 63 addressed God thus : "O God ! you are my God, I seek you ; my soul thirsts for you" God was his personal God, the one who he possessed by faith, the one whose infinite greatness he knew and to whom he could nevertheless address himself so freely with all his heart !

And those two words had infinite value to Lord Jesus when he spoke them on the cross. More than all the others, God had been his God, all the days of his life on earth. He had now come, as an expiatory victim, to bear our sins in his body on the cross (1 Peter 2:24). He had just known for us the abandonment of God during those three hours when darkness covered the scene of the crucifixion. Yet God had remained his God. Would I still pronounce these words lightly ? No, God also wants to be my God.
