All Scripture is inspired by God and helpful in teaching truth, refuting error, correcting faults, and forming a way of life that God requires. 2 Timothy 3.16
Nothing but by the Word of God
In 1535, the city of Geneva turned to the Reformation. Until then, she was known for rioting, indecent dancing, drunkenness, adultery and other vices. The Council did not know what to do to change this state of affairs. He issued decree after decree to stem the vices, but nothing helped. The moral level of the city continued to decline.
So we called on Jean Calvin (French theologian (1509-1564)). His only weapon was the preaching of the Word of God. He preached every day, and as a result of that preaching things began to change. When the people of Geneva became acquainted with the Word of God and allowed it to influence their behavior, their city became almost a New Jerusalem from which the Gospel radiated to the rest of Europe, to Great Britain and to the New World.
This change led to others : on the social level (regulation of sanitary conditions, creation of a hospital and a house for the poor, education of people at all levels, creation of the Academy which influenced the whole Europe, establishment of industries).
Geneva is the best example of what can be achieved, morally and socially, by the faithful preaching of the Word of God.
