Obey

Children, obey your parents, in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and your mother - this is the first commandment with a promise - so that you may be happy and live long on earth. Ephesians 6:1-3

“Obey, always obey ! I wonder when I will finally be able to do what I want and no longer have to submit to parents orders. Anyway, they don't understand anything, they are "old fashioned"..." These are thoughts you might have.

And yet, obedience, which you so often view as a constraint, is both a necessity and a privilege. It shows itself in a different way depending on the period of life :

You understand that a young child must obey his parents, for his own good, to avoid hurting himself, because he knows very little about life. Obedience, in the first years of life, is of the absolute kind, although it is sometimes difficult to obtain.

If you read "To Pleasing the Lord", it is undoubtedly that you gave your life to Jesus Christ. Your obedience to your parents then changes in nature : you obey them in order to obey your Lord, because he asks you to. In time, it will even help you to understand that it is right, that is, according to the will of God.

Perhaps, like many young people today, you will have to leave your parents' house one day to pursue studies, an apprenticeship, an internship. So, finally, long live freedom ? Remember that as long as you are financially dependent on your parents, you still owe them obedience, even from a distance. Even if they are no longer in control of the day-to-day details, you will want to not disappoint them and follow whatever directions they may have given you. This is somewhat what the Philippians did, those spiritual children of the apostle Paul (see Philippians 2:12).

Then, if you have a job and a home of your own, you will have adult autonomy and will no longer have to obey your parents. I also hope that you will have the joy of getting married one day ; then you will leave your father and your mother, according to divine order (Genesis 2:24 ; Matthew 19:5). However, you will continue to honor your parents until their death by listening attentively to their experienced advice, by regular news and visits and, if they need it, by caring in return for those they love. 'gave.

Obeying is righteous, it is pleasing to God, it is a practical way of showing godliness (1 Timothy 5:4). Basically, it's a privilege !
