Indeed, if someone listens to the word and does not put it into practice, he looks like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and who, after observing himself, goes away and immediately forgets how he was. James 1.23, 24

In everyday life, we look at ourselves in a mirror to check that our outfit or our appearance is acceptable, and if necessary, we make the necessary improvements.

The same principle applies to the spiritual life. Our mirror is the Word of God, the Bible. It describes what we are able to do or think naturally. It teaches us what is in accordance with God's will and what is not. In her second part she tells us about Jesus Christ. To read the Bible is to listen to God. It is addressed to our heart and to our conscience.

The prophet Nathan must have used the account of the poor man's sheep, stolen by the rich man, to shed light on the conscience of David, the king who had gravely sinned by taking another's wife (see 2 Samuel 12. 1, 7). He must say to him : "It is you who are that man !". The message of the Word of God is a revelation that shows us what honors God in our life, and encourages us to persevere. It also tells us what is wrong, with the means to stop doing it.

We invite you to read a short, very current book of the Bible : the Epistle of James. Let us ask God to help us listen with attention to what he tells us, so that spontaneously, without constraint, we wish to apply in our lives what he reveals to us in his Word.
