Once for all

When to Christ, he came... and entered the most holy place once and for all... He thus obtained an eternal redemption for us. (Hebrews 9:11, 12)

And it is because of this will that we have been made holy through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once and for all. (Hebrews 10. 10)

Once for all

In ancient times, God had given instructions to His people concerning the forgiveness of sins : animal sacrifices were to be offered regularly, and constantly renewed, proving that sin was never taken away forever. No one, therefore, could be at peace, with a comfortable conscience before God (Hebrews 10, 1-4). These sacrifices were a reminder of the existence of sin, and showed the patience of God. They foreshadowed the sacrifice that God himself had prepared in the person of his only begotten Son, Jesus, “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).

But Jesus' sacrifice on the cross was accomplished once and for all. The forgiveness obtained is therefore final. The Book of Hebrews emphasizes the contrast between the sacrifices of old and the sacrifice made by Jesus. Before breathing out, Jesus cried out, “It is done !” (John 19.30).

The priests (high priests) of old had to remain standing, in order to be able to renew the sacrifices. But Jesus Christ ascended into heaven, sat down, and “is done with sin” (1 Peter 4.1). This fact shows that the forgiveness obtained cannot be called into question. The problem is solved forever !

Other texts confirm this again :

He offered himself once and for all for sins (Hebrews 7. 27). “He revealed Himself only once to do away with sin through His sacrifice” (Hebrews 9:26). Whoever believes it is therefore saved forever ! Nothing can give the believer a more solid peace than this expression : “once and for all”.
