Our offerings

Sunday February 20, 2022

Jesus, having sat down vis-à-vis the trunk, watched how the crowd put money into it. Many rich people put in a lot. There came a poor widow, she put in two small coins, making a quarter of a penny. Mark 12. 41, 42

Our offerings

A widow, deposits two small copper coins in the treasure of the temple, the place where one could deposit the money which one wished to give to God. It was an insignificant sum. However, Jesus draws the attention of his disciples to underline the very great generosity of this woman : "This poor widow gave more than any of those who put in the trunk, because all put in their surplus, but she put of her necessities, all that she had to live" (Mark 12. 43, 44).

No one had noticed this woman, but Jesus, who knew her situation and her heart, discerned the value of her gift. Her gesture proved how much she loved God. His offering was an act of faith, a complete surrender of his life into the hands of God.

The Bible does not tell us much about her, except her poverty and her faith. Without faith, she wouldn't have offered her last penny, but she trusted in her God who would take care of her better than she could.

Wouldn't it have been much easier for her to decide that her gift was truly unworthy of God ? Finally, what need did he have for two small coins ? But she was thinking of Him to whom she was giving this gift.

God is sensitive to what we give, but he is above all attentive to the humble and discreet disposition of the heart of the donor. How you give is worth more than what you give.
