"The thief comes only to steal, to kill, and to destroy: I have come that the sheep may have life, and be abundant." John 10.10
Can Christians suffer from depression ? The answer is yes ! I am convinced that everyone will experience depression one day or another. And there are probably millions of people who live continually in a kind of sadness and gravity.
For a very long time, I was unstable from an emotional point of view ...
I know what it's like to be depressed. For a very long time, I was emotionally unstable because of the abuse I suffered during much of my childhood. They had made me negative, critical and prompt to discouragement. I thought it was better to expect nothing good from existence, so as not to be disappointed. That did not prevent me from being unhappy and deprived of peace.
Fortunately, I finally came to a point where I could not bear to live like that. I began sincerely to seek God and beg him to change me - at any price. This marked the beginning of a long and difficult journey towards freedom. But it was worth it ! Today I am so happy to have found freedom in Christ that I do everything to keep it.
Depression starts with disappointment. When it is brooding in our soul, it leads to discouragement. Gradually, discouragement grows and it is depression. If depression persists and worsens, people are defeated and lose hope. At this stage, they do not want to do anything and tend to isolate themselves. The next step is despair, which is the most serious form of depression.
It is vital to resist depression from the first signs. The sooner you take it in hand and the less it will affect you. On the other hand, the more deeply it will take root in your soul, the more difficult it will be to dislodge.
The fact is that your happiness and your peace depend on your inner state. But the good news is that depression can be defeated.
If you are often in a bad mood, angered or bitterness, if you are irritable or over-sensitive, examine yourself closely and try to determine the causes of your condition. You are directed by your inner life - your thoughts and attitudes. Begin by making an inventory of your thoughts. What is really going on in you ? What do you think ? What are the attitudes of your heart ? How do you react to what is going on around you ?
Learn to take responsibility for your thoughts and attitudes from your heart.
Action for Today
When you come to God to tell him honestly what is going on in you, he gives you his mercy, love and grace. And that's what changes you. This is where you find peace and healing.
