It was during the last "family reunion" with his disciples, Jesus expresses his concern them. He knows how his death and resurrection announced disturb them and upset their thoughts marked by Jewish culture. Repeatedly, Peter denied this aspect of the ministry of his Master. Patiently, the Lord warns and helps them understand, with particular addressing Peter. Why ? Consider some attitudes of Peter and the Lord's care to him :
- The scene of the Transfiguration reported in Luke 9 : 28-36 directly follows the evocation of the rejection of Jesus and his death. Two witnesses recognized the Jews, Moses and Elijah, are like "recalled" to confirm that this death was known and announced in A.T. Peter does not understand the message of this scene and wishes to extend this moment of glory, "Let us make three tents" (v. 33).
- After the last Passover meal, Jesus refers to the tragic events that followed : "You will all fall away (or shaken) about me tonight" (Matthew 26. 31.). Pierre comes, as usual, and is committed to brave the prison and death, even as Jesus warns his denial (v. 34).
- Peter does not hesitate to use his sword when Jesus was arrested. But it reminds him the work he must do : "The cup which the Father hath given me, shall not drink I not ?" (John 18. 11).
- Despite the warning of the Lord Jesus, Peter follows in the palace of the high priest "to see the end" (Matthew 26. 58.) "Where I go, thou canst not follow me now" (John 13 . 36). Hope he a turnaround ?
Faced with Pierre interventions that concerns us is the patience of the Lord to make him change internally. And in the last scene, it will go up to Peter denying the Lord that his fall and the look of Jesus produce in him a salutary shock (Luke 22. 62).
How many times do we give the Lord the opportunity to exercise his patience with us ?
