The western world is undoubtedly a consumer society. Products and services of all kinds are offered on gleaming displays and flamboyant advertisements to encourage an ever-expanding and ever faster consumption. It is no longer a means of satisfying needs, but a means of differentiating or integrating itself.
Is this good, this proposed service, indispensable? Is it useful ? The question is almost out of date. The important thing is the immediate, personal satisfaction and also the look of others ... But does all this bring a lasting satisfaction or does it maintain rather a permanent dissatisfaction ?
The need to consume in abundance is not new. The astonishing little book of Ecclesiastes is discussed in a masterly manner, especially in the first two chapters. He talks about a man who was one of the biggest consumers of the land, in all areas, totally self-centered.
His great riches helping him, he was able to launch great works and multiply the acquisitions (Eccles 2: 1-7), which enabled him to become even richer (v. 8). All his senses have been solicited in this unbridled consumption (v. 8). He was also a great consumer of honors (v. 9). But the conclusion of this man is so disillusioned : "Behold, all was vanity and pursuit of the wind" (v.11) !
Where can we find true satisfaction, the one we never regret, precisely because it is full and complete ? Only Jesus Christ gives it. Salomon noted the failure of his search for pleasure and satisfaction. How different is the language of the apostle Paul in his letter to Timothy, his most devoted spiritual son and collaborator. He talks about experience. In all his conduct he sought to do what is pleasing to God. This is a life of godliness. Conjugated with contentment, it is a great gain. What more could one desire of him who finds in Jesus the substance, purpose, and strength of his life ?
