"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God who gives to all liberally without reproach, and it will be given ; but let him ask in faith, nothing wavering in any way ; for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, the wind and tossed ; that such a man does not expect to receive anything from the Lord; he has two in his thoughts, unstable in all his actions" James 1. 7, 8.
A Christian lacks wisdom and is for God to be headed in the situation or in the event that it crosses. But there ! For one reason or another, he asks while doubting that God will hear. Is it too preoccupied with his own weakness ? Is he afraid that God will lead him to an event he dreads ? Thinks he that to his request, he must give up something to which he is very attached ?
This Christian forgets that God loves us to ask what we need. Our insistence does not interfere. God is not a reproach to that request ; He delights even to give generously. And yet, despite what he knows about God and his promises, doubting the Christian demand. One moment, it rests on the promises of God ; the next moment, he forgets that God is good. He is restless, indecisive, inconsistent. These hesitations should not characterize a child of God.
- Restless ? "Be careful for nothing ; but in every circumstance, let your requests to God by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving ; and the peace of God ... will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus "(Phil. 4 6, 7).
- Undecided ? "He always fights for you in his prayers, that you may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God" (Col. 4. 12).
- Inconstant ? "Being fully fortified, according to the power of his glory, to all patience and perseverance all, with joy" (Col. 1. 11).
Ask God for wisdom and confidence : they are wrought by prayer and each can receive. Let us pray and let her requests, without questioning either his power or his willingness to hear us, in full assurance in its resources and its promises. This is the surest way to be "perfect and complete, lacking nothing" (Jas. 1 4).
