"Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you ... I'm requests for them ... for those you have given me ... This is not only for them I make requests, but also for those who believe in me through their word. "John 17. 1, 9, 20

Jesus knows he will be crucified the next day. However it seems to us an astonishing availability for each of his. He washes the feet of his disciples, he prayed for Peter that he feels threatened, he calms a dispute between the disciples who question their place in the future kingdom ... Soon, he went to Gethsemane. "Seized with fear and great distress" (Mark 14. 33), it accepts the means chosen by the Father to save us : take upon Himself our sins and bear the guilt.
In chapter 17 of John, he looks up to heaven and prays to his Father despite the pressure of circumstances. What he wants is to give eternal life to those the Father has given him, for they know. They are his disciples with whom he spent a few years and to whom he taught everything they could understand. Now they will live without him and be his witnesses in a difficult world. Also he recommends to his Father. It even extends its application to believers of all time : "those who believe in me through their word." Applications of Jesus for these new believers are no less great than his own disciples. Despite the hour of the cross and abandon that approach, he is concerned about his disciples and all who are led to believe by their means.
Jesus ends his prayer with a wonderful application again : "Father, I desire that those whom You have given Me, that where I am, myself, they may be with me, to behold my glory" (v. 24). The glory that Jesus will find (v. 5) is proof that the Father loved the Son before the foundation of the world (v. 24). And we are loved with the same love that he (v. 23). Loved this point seems unimaginable, yet it is reality !
