Pray for India (1)

Monday January 31, 2022

There is no longer either Jew or Greek, there is no longer either slave or free, there is no longer either man or woman ; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3. 28

Then he (Jesus) said to them : Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Mark 16. 15

Pray for India (1)

Around 1800, in Serampore in India, north of Calcutta, something had just changed.

At the extremity of this country with thousand-year-old traditions, some people from various religions now live together, in good harmonies work on the same project, and schools are open to children from all walks of life...

Why that ? For several years, William Carey, who came from England with a missionary team, has worked tirelessly for the gospel. After a start without apparent result, the carpenter Krishna Pal, of the craftsman caste, is baptized in the Hooghly river, a tributary of the Gang with "sacred" waters. Then it is a Brahman who comes to faith; then Krishna Pal's daughter marries a Brahmin converted to Christ, which is forbidden outside her caste. When Goluk, one of the first Bengali converts, dies, four Christians carry the coffin (two missionaries, a Brahmin and a Muslim convert). Soon the mission had more than 300 baptized people and 26 native language schools with 10,000 students. Finally, Carey oversees the translation of the entire or partial Bible into 34 languages !

Today, India has 1.3 billion people. It has 24 official languages, but 1653 languages in total. Several million gods are revered there... The gospel has progressed since the mission of W. Carey, but India remains a country where Christianity has penetrated little. Yet we do not doubt that the Lord has countless believers in this country. Pray for the gospel in India !
