Pray the promises of God ! (1)

“All the promises that the Lord had made to the people of Israel came true ; not a single one remained without effect.” Joshua 21. 45

What is a promise ? According to the Larousse, it is “a commitment that one makes to accomplish something, or an assurance that something will happen.” Just as God created the universe and everything in it by the power of His words, so every promise He has spoken has come true. For example, He promised Abraham :

1 - to make him the father of many nations (Genesis 17. 4),

2 - to make it extremely fruitful (v. 6),

3 - to make him the ancestor of many kings (v. 6),

4 - to establish a perpetual covenant with his descendants (v. 7),

5 - to give him in perpetual and exclusive ownership a country, Canaan (v. 8).

And God kept His word ! To Moses He said : “Say to the Israelites: I am the Lord. I'll take you out of hard labor. I will free you from the slavery that the Egyptians impose on you. By My power and My authority, I will set you free” (Exodus 6:6). The Hebrew people were liberated after more than 4 centuries of slavery in Egypt. To Joshua, God said : “As I promised Moses, I give you ownership of every place you set foot in... Throughout your life, no one will resist you. I will be with you as I was with Moses and I will never abandon you, never leave you helpless. Be courageous and strong, for you will inherit this people the land that I promised to their ancestors” (Joshua 1. 3-6). And God accompanied Joshua during the conquest of Canaan. He promised David that he would become king of Israel and that his throne would endure forever (2 Samuel 7:16). Jesus, of the line of David, acquired the right to this throne by His sacrifice on the cross and His resurrection. So the promises of God are certain and sure. And those which concern us all, will certainly be accomplished, without exception.
