Promises without tomorrow ?

Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfill them! Psalm 76.12

In 1711, the King of Portugal, John V was still childless after three years of marriage. He vowed to God that he would build a palace intended to be a monastery, if he granted him an heir. It was granted: a girl was born who later became the Queen of Spain.

And Jean V to make his wish come true. The project was grandiose. To achieve it, 50,000 workers were hired. The palace, completed after 13 years of work, had 800 rooms (with 4,500 doors and windows !) And covered 4 hectares. It was gold from Brazil that financed it all.

Have we in time sometimes made vows to God ? Did we accomplish them... ?

The most excellent vow according to the gospel to make to God is to follow Jesus Christ every day of your life after you have accepted Him as Savior and Master.

Then listen to his Word every day to put it into practice. It would be, says Jesus, as if we were building, not a monastery, but the house of our life on the rock, after having dug deeply.

It will not be an easy job, but the house will be made strong and secure. And during thunderstorms and storms of life, it will resist.

Proposed reading : Gospel according to Luke, chapter 6, verses 46-49.

6.46 Why do you call me Lord Jesus ! and don't you do what i say ?

6.47 I will show you what every man is like who comes to me, hears my words and puts them into practice :

6.48 He is like a man who, to build a house, dug, dug deep, and laid the foundation on the rock. A flood came, the torrent rushed against this house without being able to shake it, because it was founded on the rock.

6.49 But he who hears and does not put into practice is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation. The torrent threw itself against her and immediately she collapsed ; the ruin of this house was great.
